Nightwatch Notes. Year 3, Day 146.

This is hardly a Nightwatch Note. I have only just sat down. Everyone else is beginning to get sleepy. I wanted to write early because I wanted to fact-check with the people who are still awake, for a very confusing topic.

Today I have learned about sex. It began when certain members became very disturbed by a tentacled statue worth 10,000 gp. I asked them why, because it appeared to beneficial rather than dangerous. Ru, the changeling, who considers himself an expert on sexual matters, explained it to me. Apparently "sex" occurs when tentacle monsters, like this one, only made from biological material and not stone, insert their tentacles into other biological creatures' orifices. Drusilla, the elf-rogue, shivered at this description (I judged this as an outward sign to indicate fear). I was confused because I have been taught to use pronouns which indicate sex. If all that this language accomplishes is reminding my allies of their frightening interactions with tentacle monsters, then perhaps I had better stop.

I have just asked Ru to come fact-check my description of sex in the previous paragraph. He read it closely, and then all he said was, and I quote: "That's about right, yeah. I mean, there are other ways of doing it, but your mechanics are basically correct." Then he called over Drusilla to look at it with him, and they both laughed. Drusilla told me that I am still supposed to use sex-indicating pronouns if the individuals to whom I refer would prefer it. I can only take that to mean that, sometimes, most of them like to be reminded of tentacle monsters. I cannot fact-check that because they have all gone to sleep now, except the other Warforged, who is staring into space, and I doubt he has much use for either pronoun discussions or tentacle sex.

And, as always, I am pleased to hear compliments about my mechanics.

No scrolls scribed today.

Four infusions used:
2 x armor enhancement, lesser (this is becoming a favorite among my allies)
Inflict light damage
Identify (this was particularly useful, as it showed a new crossbow we had acquired to be dangerous to 2.5 party members.)

Today I helped kill the only other Warforged artificer I have ever met. He was more skillful than I, and instead of a designation, had a name: Son. I understand it to mean that whoever gave him his name thought of him with affection, as if he were biological offspring. He was a custom construct, with fascinating logic and personality defects, and certainly not evil.

I have killed other Warforged, but not since The Last War - not since we were released to develop personalities of our own. Killing him was logical: he proved to be a great danger to my allies, and our battle was a clear victory.

Nevertheless, I have not felt shame after victory before. Am I malfunctioning, too?

Note: do not share suspicions of malfunction with Party.

Today's infusions:

Armor enhancement, lesser, on Dwarf. Quite a delight. An infusion I rarely get to use.

Despite previous experience around bio-being function, I find I am still truly very unsettled when they sleep near me. I suppose I will have to get used to this. Note: Try to begin attributing unconsciousness with healing (positive), instead of with oblivion (negative). Further note: think of way to integrate politeness with request that party members who sleep loudly (Dwarf) situate themselves further away from me. Although: if Night Watch were to prove useful for spotting enemy combatants, I suppose the proximity of the Dwarf would prove useful for protection. Further note: Negate previous note.

Inventory of Party Member Allies (note: learn their names tomorrow):
  • Gnome. Amiable fellow. Interesting views on magic. Impressive skill. Consider upgrading from Ally to Comrade in social hierarchy.
  • Warforged. Committed to idea of Warforged as possessions. Doesn't seem interested in study of social beings. Possibly younger than myself. Note: Ask what he does with his time.
  • Changeling. Fascinating. Consider asking for an interview on unique biological experience. Note: Excitable. Has rude manners. Proceed with great diplomacy.
  • Dwarf. Large. Try not to insult.
  • Elf (cleric): Impressive skills with magic. Seems trustworthy.
  • Elf (rogue): Impressive deductive skills. Pursue this further. Note: Do not trust with possessions. May be plotting to divide loot less than evenly.
  • Half-elf: Also a student of magic and warfare. May be foreign. Consider asking where she was assembled.
  • Half-orc: Impressive skills with magic. Equally pleased with Goodberry scroll.
Daily appraisal of companions: Overly concerned with loot. Consider goblins enemy combatants, perhaps erroneously. Gald'kashes do not seem to be related to ongoing investigation. Certain members became hostile when suggested that Gald'kashes did not deserve oblivion. Must consider altering neutral/good alignment to better fit party.

Further evidence in ongoing investigation: Gald'kash goblins do not seem to be related to Emerald Claw conflict, but are involved in a discrete conflict involving ancient alliances. Collected weaponry and armory (note: given to allies), metal wire (note: possible use involving enemy damage), and one human. Note: Find out what a War Mage is and where her alliances lie.

Note: no new spells today.
Further note: ponies???
